The Acquisitions Manager is responsible for the selection of vendors for the purchase of library materials. Qualities of service (i.e., speed, accuracy, special services) and price discounts are of primary importance. Approval plans are reviewed periodically to ensure the library is obtaining the best prices and service it can.

To support small, local bookstores, Decker Library is also committed to purchasing books from two particular vendors:

• Red Emma’s Bookstore, Baltimore, MD
  • Worker-owned coffeehouse and bookstore
• Mahogany Books, Washington, DC
  • A local, independent bookstore that is “dedicated to meeting the literary needs of readers in search of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora.

When acquiring fiction and non-fiction books, in particular, Decker Library staff will check to see if either of these two bookstores have materials we seek in stock.
